WEP encryption standards have almost been completely phased out due to the lack of security this early adoption really provides, yet many, MANY places still use this as their standard form of protection. The only thing worse would be to have a COMPLETELY open system.
I won't go into all the technical aspects of why this option makes your secrets less secure than a teenager with a Facebook account (you can read "Why WEP Sucks" here if you're interested), but I will SHOW you why it sucks and how fast anyone with the proper tools and 2-5 minutes of free time can access your network.
What You Will Need
- Kali Linux (either a bootable LiveCD or bootable USB image)
- Network card capable of monitor mode ("promiscuous mode") and packet injections. My recommendation is: Alfa AWUS036H
- Latest version of Wifite (included in Kali Linux)
- A few spare minutes of time.
Cracking WEP Encryption
A few side notes before the video. Kali Linux is not required but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. You could also use other penetration operation systems such as BackBox, ArchAssault, or even Kali's predecessor, BackTrack. No matter which Linux distribution you choose to use, you MUST have Linux in order to perform this crack. This Wifite software is not available on a Windows based operating system.
Once you choose which one to use, I would also recommend creating a bootable USB and having a partition for encrypted persistence. What that means is any changes you make while using that operating system will be saved for future use. This is not the case when using LiveCDs.
Now, let's get to the hack:
