This month has been a lot of fun showing everyone different hacking practical jokes: taking down WiFi routers, disabling keyboard/mouse on a target computer, and even defacing a website with pictures of my dogs.
But it's time to get serious with something that hits very close to home — webcam hacking. Years ago I wouldn't have given two shits about people spying on me and watching my moves; hell, I would have even craved the attention. Reality TV would have suited me so well. However, with a family in the mix now, times have changed and I value my privacy, and especially my security, in a much, much higher regard.
I even ran a stopwatch to prove to you that this hack is possible in less than 00:00:40 [that's 40 SECONDS, not minutes]. Fortunately for you, I ran this hack against a obscenely vulnerable computer and most (not all) people out there, including you, will have a much higher level of security surrounding your devices. But be warned, just because your device is more secure, doesn't mean it's unhackable — it just means it might take a little longer to infiltrate.
What You Will Need
- Kali Linux (either a bootable LiveCD or bootable USB image)
- Internet connection
- Metasploit Framework (included in Kali Linux and available for Windows)
Just watch the video and use this information for legal purposes. I was NOT kidding when I said, "I'm in your house and you don't even know it. I'm watching you cook as you scroll through a recipe on your tablet. I'm watching your husband update his fantasy football line on his laptop. I can see your daughter Facetiming with a friend. I can watch your son workout before football practice. And I can even watch your dog lick his nuts if I wanted to." If you still don't believe me, that's relatively benign compared to what these guys will do with your webcam activity.
Now, let's get to the hack:
