It's hard to believe that there was a time I started watching season one of Parks and Recreation and didn't particularly care for any of the episodes — very hard to believe, actually. But, for me, the six episode story arch was rather lackluster and boring (at least the first viewing).
The characters were a mishmash of different government employees working for the small (fictional) town Pawnee, Indiana, each with their own supportive or disdainful attitudes towards the government. Early test screenings for season one were abysmal, and many critics and industry observers were skeptical about the show's future.
Producers decided to give the middle finger to critics by taking a slightly new approach to its format and tone, having the second and subsequent seasons receive much higher critical acclaim. Take that, bitches. Since then, Parks and Recreation has been nominated and won numerous Golden Globe and Emmy awards. Plus, season two gave Rob Lowe his best role since "Wayne's World." [Scratch that: "Tommy Boy" — He fucking kicked ass in "Tommy Boy"!
My wife and I gave it a second try, and we're glad we did because Parks and Recreation is an extremely funny show (as long as you can get through season one).
